ABOUT THE FABRIC

fiber
this jacket was made from a vintage silk georgette sari. georgette is a loose weave and drape, much like chiffon, but a tiny bit thicker. silk fabric, even at this weight, is surprisingly warm!

embroidery
the embroidery is done with zari thread, which is a metallic, wound thread. traditionally, the threads were gold, silver, and other precious metals. zar is a persian word for gold. also, zari means "beautiful" in swahili. that's you in this jacket!

pattern
this sari was hand dyed in the leheria style. leheria is a type of tie-dying practiced in rajasthan. the fabric is rolled diagonally and tied at intervals. then it's dipped in dye, removed, and left to dry. when the ties are removed and the fabric unrolled, the pattern of irregular stripes emerges, creating the illusion of rippling water. the word leheria means wave in rajasthani.

provenance
i purchase these vintage textiles from a single mother in delhi. she says she wants to share her country's beautiful fabrics with the world. she goes out on trips to small villages in remote parts of india and buys saris and other fabrics from the women there. in this way, she is contributing to the village economy as well as supporting herself and her son. i love being part of this network.

this piece is hand-made from vintage sari and may have signs of wear such as small, light stains or tiny holes. i do my very best to insure that each piece is as close to perfect as possible, but please remember that they came from saris that have been worn and loved by one or more women. if there is something that is unacceptable to you, that i missed, i will gladly take the piece back. these may be steamed, dry cleaned, or carefully hand washed in cold water.
